District 15 News — Fellows in Action — Mission to Guatemala

August 21, 2017 — FELLOWS IN ACTION MISSION TO GUATEMALA It conjures up visions of Sisyphus to learn of the persistence and energy of Fellow T. Bob Davis and his journey into the world of dental volunteerism. It is a journey that began in 1977 when his wife, Janis encouraged him to volunteer to participate in a dental mission to Matamoros, Mexico where youngsters in a Children’s Home were in need of dental care. Large groups of volunteers soon joined Dr. Davis on those annual missions, but sadly, after thirty-four years of volunteerism the drug cartels made the area so dangerous that a new locale had to be found. After a one year search,...

District 13 News — Fellow in Action — Oaxaca, Mexico 2017

August 17, 2017 — A Picturesque Port Un Puerto Pintoresco At times, Oaxaca is referred to as the “Cultural Capital of Mexico.” Even though this is heard frequently on the local radio, I am quite sure it could be contested or debated by those from other regions. Some say the State of Oaxaca offers the best of Mexico, both old and new. It has a vibrant urban City, abundant indigenous arts and handicrafts, renowned native cuisine, fascinating history, natural wonders, and a rich cultural heritage, including 16 separate living languages. Mexico is the second largest country in Latin America, and the only one located in North America. Due to my intrigue, nearly 20 years...

That was in 2008. She had assumed that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provided care to the veterans. However, after she learned that most veterans are not eligible for dental benefits, she included the veterans themselves in her outreach program.
