The USA Section Foundation supports many Missions and Charities within the United States of America and around the Globe. Financial assistance from the ICDF is focused on education, communication, leadership, and the delivery of dental care to the under-served throughout the world. Every Fellow of the USA Section is automatically a member of the Foundation.
Dr. James Allen of Kentucky was elected to a three-year term as President of the ICD USA Foundation at the Annual Meeting of the Section in Orlando in 2010. He had previously served on the joint Section/Foundation committee as the USA Section Project Chairman. The Section and the Foundation have spent a considerable amount of time and effort on defining and strengthening their relationship over the course of the last year. Dr. Allen asks that all ICD Fellows continue to support the Foundation during these tight economic times. This will increase the corpus of the Foundation and allow us to continue to fund and initiate new programs which the Section and Foundation support. Our goal is to receive $100 from each Fellow in 2011. Over the last several years the Foundation has contributed approximately $100,000 per year to activities and projects including such things as the International Student Exchange program, the Kikuyu Clinic in Kenya, the Tanzania Clinic, the Haitian Health Foundation, the Southeast Asia Masters Program of Public Health Dentistry and many others. Every Fellow of the ICD should take pride in what you have accomplished.
Several years ago the Section and Foundation began its support of what has become a most successful initiative. It is the Kikuyu Dental clinic in Kenya. Dr. Bill Hunter, shown in the photo with one of his Kikuyu patients, proposed the project to the ICD. The project was initiated by members of the First Presbyterian Church in Fargo which also continues to send funds to subsidize outreach projects and staff training. The dental unit, through its twenty outreach programs, has screened over 4000 children from schools, children's homes, and villages. In 2010 dental students and their professor, Dr. Kenneth May, from the University of Michigan were able to participate in several outreach efforts and work with the clinic staff. The Clinic is becoming a vibrant center for learning and volunteers are continually being received.
