District 11 News: Tri-College News

Summer 2008, Vol. 1, Issue 1

WICD plans breakfast, will honor Distinguished Fellow
ICD’s Annual Breakfast will be held Friday, July 11, 2008, at the WAC (during PNDC). We will recognize our incoming 2008 Fellows, Don Joondeph, Pollene Speed-McIntyre, Rob Merrill, Tar-Chee Aw, John Ames, Laura Williams, and Doug Jackson as well as our UW scholarship and leadership award winners.

Special honored guests this year will include Jack Clinton, Dean at OHSU and 11th District Regent and USA Section President Newell E. Warr of Salt Lake City and UW dental graduate.

2008 Fellow of the Year
We will also honor our 2008 ICD Distinguished Fellow of the Year, to be announced at the meeting.

At its annual meeting in July of last year, the Washington Section named Dan Middaugh ICD Distinguished Fellow. A member of the University of Washington Dental School faculty for most of his professional career, Dan served in many teaching and administrative capacities there, ultimately becoming head of the Continuing Dental Education program. He has also been busy as a leader in his component and state dental organizations and served as president of the Washington State Dental Association. He twice received the WSDA Presidential Award for service to his profession.

A long-time interest and a top issue of Dan’s presidency was getting new dental grads to locate in rural areas of our state, where a high percentage of dentists are reaching retirement age. In recent years he has hosted an annual dinner for five dental student leaders at the University of Washington — class presidents and student body president — where he presents each with $1,000 of his own money to recognize their service and encourage others to leadership roles. Dentists and dental students need look no further than Dan Middaugh to find a role model of what leadership and service to the profession are all about.

ICD Peace Corps Volunteer Exams
One of ICD’s major projects is free exams and x-rays for Peace Corps Volunteers. As a Fellow in the ICD, please sign-up to do complimentary exams and a fmx (or bwx and pan) for new Peace Corp Volunteers. If they need dental work beyond the exam, you may opt to do it at your normal fees. Peace Corp volunteers will bring in the necessary paper work.

Seattle seems to have a large number of new recruits as the University of Washington has one of the highest volunteer rates in the nation.

So if you can help, go to www.usaicd. org home page “Highlights—New Programs” or contact the ICD office at (301) 251-8861 or maryjo@usaicd. org to volunteer. You will not be inundated.
