International College of Dentists - Section I - USA

January 2007

ICD Peace Corps Project

We are happy to tell you about the new Peace Corps project which was approved at the ICD-USA Section Board of Regents' meeting in Las Vegas. The Peace Corps receives approximately 6,000 applicants a year from throughout the United States. Some of the applicants have their own dentist, others do not. Most of those accepted to serve as Peace Corps Volunteers will be in locations where there is no access to dental care. For this reason, there is a standard of dental well being that must be met before an applicant can be accepted for Peace Corps service.

ICD Fellows may now assist Peace Corps applicants by offering free clinical examinations and x-rays (either a panorex with four bite wings or a standard full mouth series) in connection with their Peace Corps application. The applicant will provide the dental examination form. Any dental treatment needed to bring their mouth to a healthy state will be the responsibility of the applicant. Our thanks go out to the hundreds of ICD fellows from all over America who have already responded to the initial request for volunteers which was mailed in November.

Both the Peace Corps and the International College of Dentists have global missions with involvement in many countries. We are excited about this effort that will allow Fellows of the International College of Dentists to help the Peace Corps mission, on a voluntary basis, as well as participate in one of the many ICD projects.

This is an opportunity to make your ICD Fellowship more meaningful. Participants will be recognized in state newsletters as well as on the Peace Corps and ICD websites. In a recent survey, an overwhelming number of Fellows agreed to participate in this effort. We hope that we can count on you.

If you have not already done so and wish to volunteer, please print a copy of this message, complete the form below and mail it to the Central Office. The information will then be sent to the Peace Corps so that they will know where the participating doctors are located.

I volunteer to provide a free clinical examination and x-rays to Peace Corps volunteers.
