February 2008 THE DEPUTY REGENT It has often been said that the Deputy Regent is the work horse of the International College of Dentists. This is so widely accepted that several years ago the USA Section Foundation established the Deputy Regent of the Year Award to recognize the remarkable efforts of these leaders. Every Constituent Chapter (every state) has a Deputy Regent who is appointed by the Regent of the District. The Deputy Regent assists the Regent in conducting the affairs of their Constituent or Component Chapters, and with the approval of the Regent, names one or more of the Counselors. In states which are heavily populated, or cover a vast area with various large population centers, it is the prerogative of the Board of Trustees to determine if the affairs and business of the District or the component could be more efficiently accomplished by having more than one Deputy Regent. When such a determination has been made the Executive Committee, in consultation with representatives of the Constituent recommends the number of Deputy Regents needed and establishes the boundaries of the areas to be the jurisdiction of each Deputy Regent. That recommendation is then presented to the Board of Regents for action. Upon approval, the Regent names the Deputy Regents. Deputy Regents arrange functions, help Counselors with the recruitment of new Fellows, are the contact person for Fellows interested in sponsoring a colleague, work closely with leadership coordinators, assist the Regent with the activities of the District and preside at meetings as necessary. They are the backbone of the ICD and deserve our admiration and thanks.
