International College of Dentists - Section I - USA

July 2008

A Review of Leadership Activities

It was decided several years ago that Leadership would be one of the principal objectives of the ICD USA Section. Dr. Curtis R. Johnson of South Dakota is the Chair of the Leadership Initiative Committee.

The Leadership Initiative is a defining mission of the International College of Dentists - USA Section. The ICD's motto Be a Leader - Make a Difference is exhibited by our fellowship in every District. Dr. Johnson states that nonprofit organizations like the ICD find it essential to collect data; therefore an informational survey is sent to all constituent chapters each spring. We thought it would be interesting to share with you the results of the 2008 survey regarding our leadership initiatives:

     * Peace Corps Project Participation 26 states
     * Newsletter (State or District) 49 regions
     * Awards 29 states
     * White Coat Ceremonies 22 schools
     * Promote Mentorship 15 states
     * Lecture forums 13 states
     * Volunteerism/Charitable Works 30 regions
     * Scholarships 19 states
     * Support Legislative Activity 17 states
     * International Student Exchange/Externship 10 states
     * Leadership Committee/Think Tank   5 states
     * Interest in Leadership Institute participation 12 regions
     * Other 11 regions

Progress is measured step by step. The above summary reflects an increase of 17 leadership activities in the USA Section since September 2007. Through the survey, 258 leadership activities have been reported. Individual leadership activities are difficult to quantify and are under reported. It is obvious that the ICD USA Section has embraced Leadership as an important objective.
