The excitement was palpable at the first ever Bridging Ceremony of the new Midwestern University College of Dentistry, located in Downers Grove, Illinois, where 130 second year dental students were about to enter into the clinical phase of their dental careers. The ceremony was held on Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Hyatt Lodge – McDonald Campus in Oak Brook, IL.  The ICD USA Section made a donation toward the Midwestern University College of Dentistry for this “Bridging Ceremony."

Dean M.A.J. (Lex) MacNeil opened the ceremony saying that the students, faculty and administration were all entering into new territory, and that “[we] will be learning together; you will help us as much as we help you."

As Regent of ICD District 8 I was invited to give greetings along with several other dental leaders in Illinois who were also on hand. Those leaders included ICD Fellows: Dr. Joe Hagenbruch, ADA Trustee District 8; Dr. Randy Ashton, President of the Illinois Chapter of the Academy of General Dentistry; Dr. Susan Becker Doroshow, Secretary of the Chicago Dental Society (CDS); Dr. Brad Barnes, President of the Illinois Chapter of the ACD; Dr. Susan Bordenave-Bishop, IL Deputy Regent, Chair of the ISDS Foundation; Dr. Barry Howell, President Illinois State Dental Society; and Ms. Milly Goldstein, Chair of the CDS Foundation.

The keynote speaker was W. Scott Waugh, DDS, FICD, FACD who is the current President of the American College of Dentists.  Dr. Scott did a superb job of taking these students through the early history of dentistry explaining how it moved from a “trade” to a “profession."  He highlighted the necessity of dental ethics, the importance of a professional respecting patients for their unique needs and values, the obligation to be honest (or not deceptive), etc. At the end of the proceedings a beautiful commemorative plaque was presented to Dean MacNeil with all 130 second year dental students' names etched upon the surface as a commemoration of this auspicious occasion!

Respectfully submitted,

Peter L. Paulson, Regent
District 8
