Origin of the Scholarship Program
On November 26, 2018, a group of Missouri Fellows made a donation of over $127,000 to the International College of Dentists Global Visionary Fund, creating the ICD-WUDAA Scholarship. St. Louis area Fellows Dr. Robert W. Boyle, Dr. Gail R. Holcomb, District 6 Regent Arnold S. Jacobson, and Dr. Mario V. Conte made the presentation on behalf of the Washington University Dental Alumni Association (WUDAA) at the ICD International Council meeting during the Greater New York Dental Meeting.
Washington University in St. Louis closed its School of Dental Medicine in 1991, but WUDAA continued operating to support the continuing education of its alumni and provide financial aid to young dentists. WUDAA directed its scholarship committee to seek a partner to continue its scholarship work. Following a two-year search for a partner—brought to fruition through Secretary General Dr. John V. Hinterman, Dr. Robert W. Boyle (Fellow), and Past International President Dr. I. Leon Aronson—WUDAA found its match in the ICD.
The program was administered by the Global Visionary Fund from 2018–2025. In December 2025, the ICD USA Section Foundation assumed full administration and management going forward.
Purpose
The ICD-WUDAA Scholarship Program awards annual scholarships to dental students in the United States. The program reflects a deep concern about the high cost of dental education and its negative impact on the career choices of graduating dentists—supporting individual students while raising awareness of the serious and growing burden of dental school debt.
